Abstract

One of the main challenges faced by universities is to be able to provide a relevant response, from a scientific perspective, to the various problems that affect people, communities and institutions. From the Metropolitan University of Education, Science and Technology- UMECIT of the Republic of Panama, a case study was developed with the aim of analyzing the priority issues in the field of environment and sustainability, which need to be addressed from university research, taking into account the voice of the actors and living forces of the provinces in the Republic of Panama. This proposal for the environmentalization of research as a transversal axis of university activity, became a process of creation of pertinent knowledge for the needs of society at the national level. The design included a close approach to each problem, taking into account the particularities of the context. Problems in different regions of Panama were addressed, including solid waste management, ecosystem conservation, mangroves, environmental regulations, organic waste as an agent of environmentalization, among others, providing valuable information for decision making and good practices in environmental matters, from the connection with different areas of knowledge, analyzing environmental challenges in a comprehensive manner and suggesting alternative solutions that are socially just and environmentally sound.
