GERITRA 2026: Regulatory update and technological evolution of a tool for the technical management of occupational risks

Abstract

The GERITRA methodology was published and validated in 2020 as a semi-quantitative tool for the technical management of occupational risks. Changes in Ecuador’s regulatory framework and the need to strengthen its computerized application led to the development of GERITRA 2026. This study aimed to analyze the tool’s regulatory update and technological evolution through a descriptive, comparative, and technological development design. Results show that GERITRA 2026 preserves the originally validated methodological core while incorporating an architecture designed to strengthen standardization, adaptability, and traceability. The tool adopts the six regulatory categories of occupational risks through a hierarchical category–risk type–hazard structure, allowing new hazards to be incorporated according to sector- or activity-specific characteristics. It also integrates a non-exhaustive, guidance-oriented catalogue of control measures that can be expanded according to organizational needs. As its main functional development, each control measure is assigned a specific planned completion date, facilitating planning, monitoring, and the generation of management indicators. Subsequent reassessment determines residual risk and enables a distinction between control implementation and preventive effectiveness. GERITRA 2026 therefore evolves into an assisted, structured, adaptable, and traceable technical risk management tool, strengthening continuity across identification, assessment, control, monitoring, reassessment, and continuous improvement.
