Systematic review of the development of school boxing
Abstract
School boxing has emerged as a sport of growing interest in the educational field, promoting the physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development of children and adolescents. The objective was to analyze the approaches, benefits, challenges, and methodological trends of school boxing based on scientific studies published between 2014 and 2024. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The Scopus database was consulted, using combinations of terms such as "school boxing," "educational boxing," and "boxing in physical education." Thirty-eight studies were selected that met inclusion criteria related to school contexts, educational intervention, and impact evaluation. The studies report significant benefits of school boxing in the development of motor skills, improved self-control, discipline, and social inclusion. Three main approaches were identified: recreational boxing, adapted boxing, and boxing as a pedagogical tool. The most common concerns are related to safety, the stigma of violence, and specific teacher training. School boxing, when appropriately adapted and contextualized, can be a powerful educational tool. Greater scientific production, clear policies, and teacher training are needed for its safe and effective implementation in schools.
