Effect of two cycling training prescriptions on emotional regulation in amateur cyclists
Abstract
The present study evaluated and compared the effects of cycling training prescribed through heart rate versus functional power on emotional regulation in amateur cyclists from Manta, Ecuador. A quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest measurements was employed using two natural groups (n = 18), defined according to their habitual prescription method. General emotional regulation was assessed using the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), while sport emotions were measured with the Sport Emotion Questionnaire (SEQ), applied at two time points: during the training block and in pre-competitive context. Additionally, physiological load indicators obtained through the TrainingPeaks platform were analyzed. Results showed no significant differences between groups regarding general emotional regulation or sport emotions in pre-competition. However, the heart rate training group exhibited higher levels of total training score stress (TSS) and time in high-intensity zones, without this translating into relevant emotional changes. A significant decrease in positive emotions toward competition was observed, particularly in women. These findings suggest that while both prescription methods are comparable in terms of general emotional response, accumulated load and competitive timing may differentially affect the emotional state of amateur cyclists. The importance of considering the emotional dimension within amateur training planning is discussed.
