Ergonomic risk in cleaning activities in hospital areas and design of improvements
Abstract
Objectives: To determine the levels of ergonomic risk associated with cleaning tasks in different areas of a general hospital by applying the REBA and RULA methods to identify postural strain and to design a preventive or corrective proposal for controlling occupational risks and improving working conditions. Methodology: Observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study (November 2025–March 2026). Five common tasks in six hospital areas were evaluated through direct observation using RULA and REBA, ERGO software, and statistical analysis with SPSS v16. Frequencies, risk prioritization, and Spearman’s correlation were calculated. Results: The evaluated tasks presented very high levels of ergonomic risk. RULA identified the highest risk in sweeping and mopping rooms and critical areas (7 points, immediate action), while REBA indicated the highest risk in cleaning high-contact surfaces (11 points, immediate action). The inter-method evaluation was negative and weak (p = -0.20), indicating a discrepancy in prioritization. Conclusions: A preventive plan was designed with technical, organizational, and training measures for immediate implementation, prioritizing interventions based on tasks and complying with national regulations with continuous improvement in occupational safety and health.
