Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyze in depth the state of the art on collaborative research in higher education. The methodology employed was a literature review using Google Scholar, Dialnet, Scielo and Redalyc with the keywords "research", "higher education" and "collaboration". Out of 150 initial documents, 37 were selected based on their relevance and contribution to collaborative research, considering criteria such as the period (2005-2023).  The results obtained indicate that collaborative research in higher education brings scholars together globally to address complex problems, driven by technology and online education. It is crucial for managing social and scientific challenges, fostering interdisciplinary exchange and global networking. Benefits include innovation, integration of diverse perspectives, significant social impact and optimization of resources. Implementation requires leadership, interdisciplinary team building and overcoming cultural and logistical challenges. Challenges include time constraints, disciplinary differences, and balancing technology and personal interaction. It can be concluded that as higher education becomes more collaborative and competitive, based on knowledge networks, its quality, relevance and social impact are significantly strengthened. Collaborative research, crucial for the advancement of institutional research agendas, drives innovation and improves lives. Generating strong academic partnerships enriches the research culture and maintains the relevance of universities in society. This process requires leadership, adequate infrastructure and continuous review to maximize its benefits and overcome challenges.
