Abstract

The main objective of this study was to identify the hierarchy in the value structure of technical higher education students. The research was conducted by collecting data through the Schwartz Value Survey from 197 students at a higher technological institute in the city of Quito, aged between 18 and 24 years old. The study evaluates the four dimensions of Schwartz's model: self-transcendence, self-enhancement, openness to change, and conservation. Additionally, the individual values/factors of the model were analyzed: power, achievement, hedonism, stimulation, self-direction, universalism, benevolence, tradition, conformity, and security. The data analysis corresponds to the global reliability analysis of the instrument, as well as the reliability analysis by factor, in all cases showing good or acceptable internal consistency. Subsequently, a descriptive analysis of the data was carried out to reveal the students' preference order for the ten values mentioned above. It is noteworthy that the identified value hierarchy differs considerably from other studies conducted on similar populations. However, the discussion of the results indicates that during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the value structure of young adults was modified. Regarding gender differences, no significant differences were found in nine of the ten values that make up the Schwartz model, with stimulation being the only value where statistical differences were found in the studied population.
