Abstract

The following study addresses a growing concern: many young athletes drop out of sports during adolescence due to a variety of internal and external factors. These include lack of motivation, inadequate coaching, academic pressures, family issues, and limited support systems. The proposed motivational strategy incorporates psychological, social, and educational components. It emphasizes the importance of setting achievable goals, fostering a sense of belonging within the team, and building positive coach-athlete relationships. In addition, the strategy encourages parental involvement and peer support, both of which are crucial in maintaining long-term engagement in sports. The research was conducted through interviews, surveys, and direct observation of local basketball programs. Findings revealed that athletes who felt emotionally supported and personally motivated were less likely to quit. Consequently, the strategy integrates workshops on mental resilience, personalized feedback from coaches, and recognition of individual progress to reinforce athletes’ commitment. By applying this motivational framework, basketball programs in Machala can not only improve retention rates but also enhance the overall development of young athletes. The study concludes that motivation is a dynamic process that must be nurtured through consistent encouragement, strategic communication, and a supportive environment tailored to the unique needs of adolescent players.
