Contemporary challenges of inclusive education: global reflections and perspectives
Abstract
This reflective article explores the main challenges and benefits associated with implementing inclusive education in a global context. It aims to analyse how education systems face contemporary challenges in their effort to ensure equitable and quality education for students, regardless of their abilities, backgrounds or circumstances. The methodology used is based on a review of existing literature as well as personal reflections on teaching experience. Recent studies and case studies are examined that illustrate both the successes and difficulties encountered in implementing inclusive education. Among the benefits of inclusive education, the article highlights its ability to promote equity, reduce educational barriers and foster a culture of respect and empathy among students. Inclusion not only improves academic outcomes for students with special needs, it also enriches the learning environment for all by promoting diversity and collaboration. However, the challenges of inclusive education are significant. These include disparities in available resources, the need for ongoing and specialized teacher training, and the difficulty of adapting curricular to a wide range of needs, and persistent social and cultural barriers that hinder the full integration of all students. The importance of inclusive education is reaffirmed as an essential means for social justice in education, while recognizing that continued and coordinated efforts are required to overcome current challenges and fully realize its potential.
